ELECTRIC CARS

Today we began our project on electric cars. We began by looking at some toy cars. Our OBJECTIVE was to explore and investigate different cars and to decide if a product suited its intention.

We then had to complete different statements with regard to each product.

Today in Science we made paperclip spinners. Our ENQUIRY was to discover how the amount of paperclips attached to a paper spinner would affect its falling speed.
We talked about PATTERN SEEKING and FAIR TESTING.
We made our spinners and then tested them.
We increased the number of paperclips by two each time, and timed each drop three times to provide more accuracy in our measurements. We used NUMBER SKILLS to MEASURE our results using stopwatches.
We then used NUMBER SKILLS to average our results.
Our objective was to COMMUNICATE our results in an accurate table, using standard measures and S.I. units - in this case seconds (the time it took each spinner to fall).





This was a perfect example of the sort of table we were looking for. The S.I. units in the top column, and neat, well presented, accurate results. Well done Mahrooshay.

ON THE MOVE!

Today we were asked to tell each other what we already know about France and Paris. We also had to decide on some things that we would like to find out about our topic, so each group came up with a list of questions that we shared with the class.

Some of the things that we knew were:

• Paris is the capital of France.
• France is one of the biggest countries in Europe.
• The highest mountain in France is Mont Blanc.
• France has over 350 varieties of cheese!
• France won the World Cup in 1998.
• Cycling is a very popular sport in France.
• French schools are shut on Wednesday, but open on Saturday morning!
  The Eiffel Tower in Paris is a very popular tourist attraction.
• Euro Disney is 1/5 the size of Paris.
• Frog's Legs and snails are popular dishes.
  

Some of the things we want to find out are:

Why is the French flag red, white and blue?
Where do the French like to go on holiday?
How many nuts and bolts are there in the Eiffel Tower?
What hobbies do French Children have?
What do frog's legs and snails taste like?
How long is the Tour de France?
What is the traffic like in Paris?
What is it like to live in Paris compared to living in Pontyclun?
What is it like to drive on the other side of the road?
What is the population of France compared to Wales?
Will we beat France in the Six Nations next year? (If only we could find out that result six months early!)

This term our topic is called 'On The Move'.

LANGUAGE ORACY-Debates involving issues related to pollution problems in Paris.
-Presentations on contrasting localities, France/Wales.

READING-Texts with information about France/Paris/Wales. Leaflets,factfiles etc.

WRITING- Information factfiles, leaflets and newspaper reports. Journalistic
writing. Writing for a persuasive argument/debate.



MATHS Multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.

Improving strategies for multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals.

Fractions and decimals.


SCIENCE FORCES-Investigations involving cars, rockets, boats and aeroplanes.

Welcome to Year 6!

What a lovely first day back. Both classes settled down well. Mr Williams and myself have huge smiles on our faces and high expectations for this year group. We would also like to extend a big welcome to our new pupils who have joined us from Nottinghamshire and France. We have spent today getting to know each other and sorting out all the day to day things like reading books, diaries and tray names. Our topics and other plans for this term will be posted as soon as possible. Good luck, work hard and let's have a fantastic year.
