Y Pant Science Project

Today some children began a collaborative science project with Y Pant. They have to talk about their favourite topics in science on a specially designed forum and will eventually take part in an open ended science investigation. We will keep you up to date with their findings.
Here we are deciding which science topics we enjoy investigating. What's your favourite?

CRUCIAL CREW

Today we visited the Crucial Crew headquarters in Nantgarw, as part of our S.A.F.E. project. It is run by the police in association with the other emergency services. It is an amazing building with lots of hands on reconstruction experiences.
We learnt all about how to cross the road safely and were shocked to find out the stopping distances of cars travelling at various speeds. It really IS 30mph for a reason!!
We were taught about the effects of alcohol on our bodies in this reconstructed pub. The optics only contained water. HONEST!
We found out about the dangers we could encounter if we played on a building site. Hard hats everyone!
We also discussed what to do if we ever had a fire in our homes. Crawling through a simulated fire was quite scary. It was a really good afternoon and we all thoroughly enjoyed such a different learning experience. Thanks very much to the Crucial Crew team and the School Liason Officers who worked hard to make our day enjoyable.

A New Term.

This term our new topic is called 'Going, Going, Gone'. We will be studying local rivers and looking a lot at the environment. We have an educational trip to the Cilfynydd Environment Centre on Thursday 7th of May.
To begin our topic we watched a video about the source of a river and its various features.
We have already found out that:-
  • A TRIBUTARY is a stream that joins a river.
  • IRRIGATION is when a channel is cut to divert water from rivers to farmland.
  • A MEANDER is when a river twists and turns.
  • THE SOURCE is the beginning of a river.

  • AN ESTUARY is the tidal mouth of a river.

By Daniel

We also read some factual and diary extracts about some explorers who tried to find the source of the Nile. Their names were Richard Burton and John Speke. They were two very different personalities! They argued all the time and were very competitive. We are writing role plays about their adventures.

Here we are writing our role plays. When we finish them you might be able to watch some on the Blog.

Pasta Blasta Rap

Blast Off Day!

Blast Off Day!

The crowds gathered in anticipation!

The cheering was heard for miles around.

Then a sudden hush fell. It was blast off time!

The teams performed their Blast Off music.

Then the rockets were blasted into space!

They were amazing! They all flew really high. One landed on the school roof. Check the Blog later for more video clips.
The competition was really close. The groups were all judged on their presentations, crew, design, music and the way in which they worked together on the project.
The winning rockets were Pasta Blaster and Supremo. A very big WELL DONE to all the children who took part this week. Thank you very much for working with such enthusiasm and for making it a fun project for me too.

Rocket Scientists Day 3

The Rockets!
This afternoon we made our rockets. It was really good fun. We had to use scrap material from around the class. We used a bottle as the base for each rocket, as this will attach to the pump which will be used to launch them tomorrow.
We gave our rockets names before going back out into the yard for a final practise of our Blast Off masterpieces.

Our rocket is called The Dark Star. We hope it lights up the sky tomorrow!

Our rocket is called Supremo.
We want it to put on a supreme show when it blasts off.

Our rocket is called R.R.R. Let's hope it's not Ah, ah, ahhhh.... in the morning.

Our rocket is called Tantive I.V.
Let's hope it doesn't have a 'tantitive' take off!

Our rocket is called Starlight. We certainly want to reach for the stars tomorrow.

Our rocket is called Blue Thunder.
Hope we don't feel blue after blast off!

Our rocket is called Pasta Blasta. Mamma Mia !
I like a bit of rocket on my salad.

Our rocket is called Rock Chick. We want to rock your world!

Our rockets are called Star and The One.  There can be only one star!

Our rocket is called S.J.2000. Let's hope it travels 2000 miles!!!!!

Blast Off Music
This morning we composed and rehearsed our Blast Off music. This is the music we will play tomorrow for the launch of our rockets.

The class had lots of different ideas. Some groups composed raps. Some groups composed instrumental pieces with voice overs. We even had the Star Wars theme played on the trumpet!

It was a fine morning, so we were able to practise in the yard. We enjoyed it, but we don't know what the neighbours thought!!

This afternoon we are making our rockets.
Log on later to see and hear one of our winning compositions, and look at our finished rockets.
