Today we started our history presentations.
We used written presentations, power point and role play to share what we have learned. Our group discussed how fashions have changed from the 1940s to the 1970s. We described how fashion was important during both decades. In the 1940s fashion was more classical and colours were darker. During the war years clothes were harder to come by, and lots of clothing was rationed as people were encouraged to 'make do and mend'. In the 1970s colour was more flamboyant. New materials like polyester and nylon were available.
Our group also talked about fashion. Hair styles in the 40s meant curls for women and crew cuts for men. In the 70s 'afro' hair was a big trend.
Our group talked about the differences in food. In the 1940s food was rationed even after the war. Lots of food was difficult to obtain, for example bananas. Meals were made from scratch and were not very adventurous. In the 70s fast food became popular. Microwaves were introuduced and ready meals became more common.
Our group talked about fashion. We described how shoes with platform heels set a real trend, compared with shoes in the 40s which were precious and often had to be sent to the cobblers to be mended, as it wes often too expensive to buy a new pair.
We talked about how school changed for both pupils and teachers in the 1940s and 1970s. Schools were much stricter in the 1940s and the cane was often used. There was a shortage of teachers due to bad pay and poor conditions. Children had to sit the 11 plus to go to grammer school. By the 1970s, comprehensive schools were beginning to be introduced.
