Today we carried on with our Music challenge of exploring lyrics and melody.

We read the words of two songs, The Blue Bell of Scotland and Danny Boy.

We had to discuss the mood and feeling of the lyrics.

We then voted on which song had the saddest lyrics. Danny Boy was the clear favourite!

We then listened to both songs and decided whether their melody reflected the lyrics.

Then we listened to Hard Times Blues.
This is a song written in the first half of the 20th century when times were hard for many people. The lyrics and the style of the music reflect this. Blues music is usually quite sad.

We then thought about other songs we knew that reflected the times in which they were written.

'London's Burning is about the Great Fire of London,' said Charlie.

'Ring a Ring a Rosies is about the plague,' said Molly.

'Man in the Mirror is about the famine in Africa,' said Frankie and Louis.

'Humpty Dumpty is about a cannon in the English Civil War,' said Ben.
